East London creatives and their spaces
'Hackney Studios' by Jenny Lewis. 116pp, hardcover with tip-in image, white and gold foiled, 220 x 265 mm landscape
As featured on The British Journal of Photography.
Hackney, East London, is well known for its vibrant creative community. Jenny Lewis spent four years in and out of studios across the borough photographing a tribe of artists who over time have defined the area. Painters, illustrators, filmmakers, jewellers, ceramicists and fashion designers invite us into their studios and share their private thoughts about the creative process.
What began with a chance encounter with fashion designer Isobel Webster grew organically into a ‘family tree’ of the borough’s creative community, with each artist nominating the next person to be photographed.
Lewis notes that many of the artists featured in the project have since been forced to leave their studios due to recent steep rent increases, and as such, hopes this book will stand as a timely reminder and celebration of the spirit of creativity in one of London’s most dynamic areas.
Jenny Lewis moved to Hackney over twenty years ago via a spell at Preston University where she acquired a Fine Art degree and a husband. Since then she has made her living as an editorial photographer but continues to pursue a range of personal work. Much of this centres on her experience of living and working in East London. Her first book, 'One Day Young', is also published by Hoxton Mini Press.

Book 13 from the series 'East London Photo Stories'
‘Dalston in the 80s’ by Andrew Holligan. 96pp hardcover, quarter-bound, gold foiled, 199 x 139 mm
This book is also available to buy as a Collector's Edition here.
For photographer Andrew Holligan, Dalston in the 80s was a world apart from the New York fashion scene, which until 1984, was where he worked. But when he made the unexpected move there, he found a humanity on the streets of East London that changed him and his art forever.
Shot with a 1950s Rolleiflex, the black and white images accompanied by hand-written notes tell Holligan’s personal story, and also give a glimpse into the lives of numerous other characters he happened to meet during his 2 years spent living in Dalston.
Andrew Holligan has worked all over the place as a photographer – from the Alaskan Tundra in the north to Australian deserts in the south. Now he lives down a secluded country lane surrounded by ancient woodland from where he supplies London restaurants with foraged wild fungi. But before this, he spent the best part of fifteen years living in Hackney, immersing himself in its vibrant art scene. Andrew continues to explore the possibilities of the photographic medium, albeit from a rural perspective.

Before the arrival of the 2012 Olympic Games, the Lea Valley was East London's secret retreat. Polly Braden and David Campany documented its strange, gently surreal beauty, before it was transformed forever.

‘Hackney By Night’ by David George. 80pp hardcover, quarter-bound, gold foiled,199 x 139 mm
This book is also available to buy as a Collector's Edition here.
David George’s photographs of Hackney by night reveal urban landscapes of stillness but also strange pastoral beauty. Here is the London that we miss when we sleep. The images are accompanied by a short story by Karen Falconer that takes the reader on a parallel journey into the night of the narrator’s past and a painful memory that is unresolved...
David George has been a photographer for over thirty-five years and spent the first twenty-five working on book, advertising and editorial commissions working mainly on location with low level light situations. At present his photographic projects are all based around the social and political narratives to be found in British man-altered landscape, which he exhibits in the UK and internationally. David lives and works in East London and in 2009 co-founded the Uncertain States photography project.

Book 8 from the series 'East London Photo Stories'
‘Lost In The City’ by Nicholas Sack. 96pp hardcover, quarter-bound, gold foiled,199 x 139 mm, Introduction by Iain Sinclair
This book is also available to buy as a Collector's Edition here.
Nicholas Sack's black and white photographs of office workers in and around the City of London capture isolated individuals and set them against the imposing architecture of modern London. The work is beautiful but also unnerving and reminds us of the alienation that can be felt in the heart of a city as well as obliquely commenting on the moral uncertainty of the banking practices in the City . The book is accompanied by an introductory essay by the well-known writer Iain Sinclair.
After drumming in rock bands and gaining a master’s degree in journalism, Nicholas Sack took up photography in his mid-twenties. He enjoyed a thirty-year career freelancing for magazines, but now concentrates on personal projects shot on black & white film on long walks across London and printed in his darkroom. This is Sack’s second book; Uncommon Ground was published to critical acclaim in 2004.

Book 7 from the series 'East London Photo Stories'
‘Columbia Road’ by Johanna Neurath. 96pp hardcover, quarter-bound, gold foiled,199 x 139 mm
This book is also available to buy as a Collector's Edition here.
East London photographer Johanna Neurath has ventured down Hackney’s Columbia Road nearly every Sunday for the past ten years to visit its flower market. Rather than depicting the obvious prettiness of people and their flowers Neurath turns her attention to the colour and pattern left behind as the market clears out, focussing on strangely beautiful displays in gutters, hazy reflections in windows and the abstract forms created by fag butts and polystyrene cups strewn across the road.
This book fuses still life and street photography to celebrate the beauty and chaos of one of East London's most famous markets.
Johanna Neurath can proudly say that she was born within the sound of Bow bells and has been a Hackney citizen for all of her adult life. Design Director at an international art book publishers and a self-confessed image junkie, type nerd and bibliophile, she has worked in publishing for more than 25 years as a book designer, picture editor, typographer and commissioning editor. On high days and holidays she takes her own street photographs. This is the first book of her own images.

‘Drivers in the 1980s’ by Chris Dorley-Brown. 96pp hardcover, quarter-bound, gold foiled,199 x 139 mm
This book is also available to buy as a Collector's Edition here.
Chris Dorley-Brown spent two summers in the mid-1980s photographing drivers stuck in traffic jams in and around East London. This series was his first on colour film and was created when he intended to document the privatisation of Rolls Royce but instead became fascinated by the faces in the traffic caused by the sell-off in the city. The cars, colours, haircuts and expressions of frustration capture the mood and tone of a unique era in Thatcher's Britain.
The images, all shot on film of course, have aged like a fine wine and are now ready to be consumed by the discerning connoisseur.
Chris Dorley-Brown’s family has lived in Hackney and Bethnal Green for nearly 200 years. His great-great-grandfather worked as a herbalist near Well Street and subsequent ancestors have included hat makers, ambulance drivers, publicans, landladies, layabouts, lightermen and aldermen. The inspiration for Chris’s pictures and films are the people and places, friends and family he has encountered in this ever-changing and challenging environment.
