RIDE 11
Winding Lanes of Hertfordshire

Distance: 79km
Difficulty: pleasant but with short, punchy hills
Time: 3–5.5 hours

There’s no pretty way out of the city from north London, but this route starting in Tottenham Hale is the quickest, so you can at least make a swift escape into the hills of Hertfordshire. There are a number of short, sharp climbs that will test your stamina, but the hedgerow-lined lanes are idyllic, so take your time. Stop off in the pretty market town of Hertford, where you can order an enlivening espresso at the excellent Hertford Coffee Lab. From there, make your way to Muswell Hill where plenty of pubs await thirsty cyclists.

Safety tips
Please cycle responsibly: always wear a helmet and remember to account for the distance of the journey. It’s also good to have the map downloaded, in case you lose signal while on the road.

Make sure you can safely attach your phone to your bike – you can find holders online here - and remember to focus on your surroundings as well as the screen.
